    «Varese, the garden city»

the most ancient documentary on Varese

of Arrigo Cinotti and Umberto Bagaini, around 1930
    16 mm, 20 minutes
    With a  live musical
    Massimo Ciarella, piano
    Introduction by Gianfranco Garancini

Realized by the Anonymous Society La Cinefoto Stampa in Milan, the short film “Varese, the garden city” it is the oldest documentary filmed existing on Varese. Found by Università Popolare and partially restored near the Center of Scientific Cinematography of the Politecnico in Milan, the film was destined to make to know to the foreign countries the natural and artistic beauties of the city: a product with a touristic purpose with explanations in English, which withdraws scenes of life and landscapes, foreshortenings of Varese and panoramas of the lakes.

The importance of this documentary, which has an extreme pertinence with the theme of the festival, it will have an added value for his sonorous “live” music, just as it happened in the old cinema of first ‘900 and it will be edited by Massimo Ciarella, pianist companion for the dance in Scuola di Ballo del Teatro alla Scala di Milano.

Music by V. Miserachs, L.G. da Viadana, T.L. da Vittoria, P.D. Maria Stella, L. Refice

The concert near the Church of  Brunella della Venerabile Cappella Musicale Liberiana raises the theme of the landscape and the nature to the tallest peaks of  spirituality. And it  does it not only thanks to a group vocal and instrumental descendant of the schola cantorum founded by Gregorio Magno (590 -604) and subsequently diriged by Giovanni Pierluigi by Palestrina, but also through the figure of a saint traditionally tied up to the spiritual essence of the nature: St. Francis.

Organized by the same Parish della Brunella the prestigious appointment inside Nature Urbane has not only been inserted for his indisputable artistic and musical value, but also for the availability of the musicians to schedule two particularly meaningful passages tied up with Festival’s theme:  the mottetto Laudate dominum de caelis composed by the same director of the Venerabile Cappella, Mons. Valentino Miserachs, and Il Cantico delle creature set in music by Padre Domenico Maria Stella.
